So. It's about time we get an extensive band thread for those devoted fans out there. Just post:
1: Your favourite band and why.
2: Your favourite song and why.
3: Your favourite album and why.
4: Your favourite set of lyrics from that band, and explain them.
-------------------------------------
So for ME, it would be:
1: Dream Theater. Everyone in the band is just TOO good at the instruments they play. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, and every song is well thought out beyond belief. They reference the golden ratio (5:8) in almost everything they do, which makes you think, and it adds symbolism.
2: My current favourite Dream Theater song is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I love long songs, and 42:02 is of decent length. The song is just amazingly well thought out, with different themes for each of the eight parts, and a recurring main theme.
3: My current favourite Dream Theater album is Octavarium. There are eight songs on the album, each averaging about ten to fifteen minutes in length. Each song goes up one key. So the first song, The Root of all Evil is in the key of F, the next song is in the key of G, and so on, until it reaches the last song, which is the octave.
4: My favourite Dream Theater lyrics are:
(root)
Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath
Remove all obstacles from our path.
(Second)
Asking questions, search for clues,
The answer's been right in front of you.
(Third)
Try to break free, long to connect,
Fall on deaf ears, and failed, muted breath.
(Fourth)
Loyalty, Trust, Faith, and Desire,
Carries Love through each darkest fire.
(Fifth)
Tortured insanity, a smothering Hell,
Try to escapr, but to no avail.
(Sixth)
The calls of admirers who claim they adore,
Drain all your lifeblood while begging for more.
(Seventh)
Innocant victims of merciless crimes
Fall prey to some madman's impulsive designs
(Octave)
Step by step we try controlling our fate.
When we finally start living, it's become too late.
These lyrics are from Octavarium (the song) from Octavarium (the album). Each section references one of the eight songs in the album. So the "(root) Our mortal sins..." section references The Root of all Evil, the first song on the album. The second part references the second song, and so on. In addition, each section of the lyrics are written in the same key as the corresponding song. Quite grand indeed!
