Extensive Music Thread Empty Extensive Music Thread

Post by Syncopated Pandemonium Sun Jan 04, 2009 6:41 pm

So. It's about time we get an extensive band thread for those devoted fans out there. Just post:
1: Your favourite band and why.
2: Your favourite song and why.
3: Your favourite album and why.
4: Your favourite set of lyrics from that band, and explain them.

    -------------------------------------
So for ME, it would be:

1: Dream Theater. Everyone in the band is just TOO good at the instruments they play. The lyrics are deep and meaningful, and every song is well thought out beyond belief. They reference the golden ratio (5:8) in almost everything they do, which makes you think, and it adds symbolism.

2: My current favourite Dream Theater song is Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I love long songs, and 42:02 is of decent length. The song is just amazingly well thought out, with different themes for each of the eight parts, and a recurring main theme.

3: My current favourite Dream Theater album is Octavarium. There are eight songs on the album, each averaging about ten to fifteen minutes in length. Each song goes up one key. So the first song, The Root of all Evil is in the key of F, the next song is in the key of G, and so on, until it reaches the last song, which is the octave.

4: My favourite Dream Theater lyrics are:
    (root)
Our deadly sins feel his mortal wrath
Remove all obstacles from our path.
    (Second)
    Asking questions, search for clues,
The answer's been right in front of you.
    (Third)
Try to break free, long to connect,
Fall on deaf ears, and failed, muted breath.
    (Fourth)
    Loyalty, Trust, Faith, and Desire,
Carries Love through each darkest fire.
    (Fifth)
    Tortured insanity, a smothering Hell,
Try to escapr, but to no avail.
    (Sixth)
The calls of admirers who claim they adore,
Drain all your lifeblood while begging for more.
    (Seventh)
    Innocant victims of merciless crimes
Fall prey to some madman's impulsive designs
    (Octave)
Step by step we try controlling our fate.
When we finally start living, it's become too late.

These lyrics are from Octavarium (the song) from Octavarium (the album). Each section references one of the eight songs in the album. So the "(root) Our mortal sins..." section references The Root of all Evil, the first song on the album. The second part references the second song, and so on. In addition, each section of the lyrics are written in the same key as the corresponding song. Quite grand indeed!

    -------------------------------------
I appolagise for the lengthy post, but if you're as devoted to YOUR favourite bands as I am to Dream Theater, you'll have lengthy posts as well! Now post away!

I don't have a favorite band, but I do like music.

If you ask me what type of music I like, I would say Hip Hop.

Smack That is a personal favorite for me.

1: Alice Cooper. He does a lot of concept albums, which I love. He is very progressive, and not afraid to do ANYTHING, such as behead himself on stage. (true story actually)

2: The Awakening is currently my favourite Alice Cooper song. It's on a concept album entitled Welcome to my Nightmare, about a guy named Steven, of course. He meets up with ol' Satan and goes completely insane. In this previous song, he ends up killing his wife, thinking he is still in his nightmare. In The Awakening, he finds himself in an easy chair in the basement, wondering how he got there. He finds "a trail of crimson spots that lead into the night". He follows them, and realizes it's blood, which is dripping from his hands. It's at this point good ol' Steven realizes that he was actually never asleep. Musically, it's rather complex. The song remains somewhat calm until he realises that he killed his wife, at which point, the song reflects his insanity.

3: My favourite Alice Cooper album is Hey Stoopid. It's yet another Steven concept album, dealing with Steven's first love, as a prequil to Welcome to my Nightmare. Sadly, I can relate to Steven in this album.

4: The following lyrics are the ending of the song Cleansed by Fire on the album The Last Temptation. (yet ANOTHER Steven concept album)
    Spoiler:

This album takes place between Hey Stoopid and Welcome to my Nightmare. Steven is just a quiet, religious kid. He basically gets tricked into selling his soul, and the album is about the turbulence in his head as he falls into insanity! It's great fun indeed. These lyrics are when he finally figures out that he has sold his soul to satan, and is attempting to cast him to hell.

1: My favourite band would be Iron Maiden. They are amazing, their songs sound so cool. Everyone in the band is extremely talented. I saw them in concert once and they put on the best show I have ever seen, and I've been to a lot of concerts. Their songs tell epic stories that have a deep meaning or even a moral to them.

2: My favourite Iron Maiden song would be Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The song is amazing the guitar riffs sound epic which is perfect because the tale that the song tells is one of the most epic tales of our time. The song also has a creepy cool sounding part in the middle which is just amazing.

3: My favourite Iron Maiden album would probably be powerslave. Amazing guitar solo's throughout the album. Every song kicks ass.

4: My favourite Iron Maiden lyrics would be:

Feel the sweat break on my brow
Is it me or is it shadows that are
    Dancing on the walls
Is this a dream or is it now
Is this a vision or normality I see
    Before my eyes

I wonder why I wonder how
That it seems the powers getting stronger
    Every day
I feel a strength an inner fire
But I'm scared I won't be able to control it anymore

There's a time to live and a time to die
When it's time to meet the maker
There's a time to live but isn't it strange
That as soon as you're born you're dying

Just by looking through your eyes
He could see the future penetrating right
    In through your mind
See the truth and see your lies
But for all his power couldn't foresee his own demise

There's a time to live and a time to die
When it's time to meet the maker
There's a time to live but isn't it strange
That as soon as you're born you're dying...
    ... and reborn again?

It's hard to say what my favourite iron maiden lyrics are because I pretty much like all of their lyrics but the lyrics to "The Clairvoyant are definately amoung my favorites because it's a well thought out and interesting song about death and the afterlife which greatly intrigues me.

Hmm... is there any way of attaching files? Perhaps at the end of people's posts, they can attach their favourite songs so other people can listen to them if they so please.
